COOP’S EYES FELT AS IF THEY HAD enough grit in them to make him think he was crawling through a sandstorm instead of dragging through his forty-eighth hour with nothing more than a couple of short naps to sustain him.

Still, his ears were attuned to the rundown of security protocols Atticus Kincaid—the “smart one” of John Kincaid’s four sons, according to the task force captain—and his team had put into place. Thick brick exterior, bulletproof glass and steel doors on the unassuming house. Remote yet accessible location in a less-populated corner of north Kansas City. Two men in the house at all times, two uniformed officers providing routine drive-bys and surveillance of the area outside. All of them trained in hostage-protection strategies. Hourly check-ins with Task Force Commander John Kincaid. Flak vests, locks, codes, alarms—and an automatic escape procedure in place should McDonough, Wolfe International or anyone else breach the system and get too close to Sarah.

Atticus pulled off his reading glasses and tossed them on top of the neighborhood map he’d unfolded over the coffee table. “Make sense?”

Coop nodded. “Sounds pretty thorough to me. I appreciate the information, even though I’m not officially on your team.”

“You’re part of the task force, so no problem.” Atticus stood when Coop did. “I know the loose ends of this Wolfe investigation have been keeping Dad up at night. So if this is how I can help, I’ll do it. You know, Dad should be slowing down these days, thinking about retirement. Instead, he’s trying to track down a murderer we can’t even ID and get his hands around Theodore Wolfe’s throat. Talk about an untouchable.”

“I thought Captain K was up for the deputy commissioner position.”

“He is.” Atticus gestured to the main hallway and followed Coop toward the driveway-side door. “To him, a desk job like that would be retirement. He wouldn’t mind slowing down for Mom’s sake, but as long as he has unfinished business with Wolfe or anyone else, Dad won’t take the job.”

Coop grabbed his jacket off the coat tree and slid into the khaki camo sleeves. He pulled his ball cap out of his pocket and plumped it back into shape. “That’s a shame. Your dad has the reputation that could bring back the respect the position deserves.”

Shrugging at the praise for his old man, Atticus combed his fingers through his wavy black hair, which he shook loose over his collar. “Yeah. He does. Thanks.”

With a nod, Coop headed past the bathroom where he knew Sarah was changing and getting ready to catch at least a few hours of sleep. It was probably best to leave without saying goodbye. To leave before he saw her again and was tempted to stay. Even the news that the baby she was carrying belonged to Teddy Wolfe didn’t stop him from wanting to protect her. But Atticus Kincaid was a good cop. He’d keep Sarah safe. He was more specifically trained for protection work than an investigator like Coop was, and better rested, besides.
